AI commercial: can AI replace a TV commercial in 2026?

By Kas Bennemeer, creative director at Setless Productions

14 October 2026

Yes, an AI commercial can replace a traditional commercial, but not in every situation. For product-led commercials, launches, social cutdowns and scenes in expensive locations, AI works well and costs a fraction of a shoot day. For emotional stories built around real faces and famous people, it works less well. The difference is not the technology. It is direction, concept and choosing the right type of commercial.

Below you will find what big brands learned, what it costs, and when AI commercial production fits your brand.

Where AI TV commercials and online ads stand in 2026

AI in advertising is no longer an experiment. According to the IAB (July 2025), half of advertisers already use generative AI for video ads. 86% use it or plan to. The expectation is that around 40% of all ads in 2026 will be made with generative AI, and smaller brands are adopting it faster than large ones.

The platforms are moving too. Meta wants to fully automate ad creation with AI by 2026, based on a product photo and a budget.

That does not mean every AI ad works. The best-known examples show exactly where it goes wrong.

Lesson 1: McDonald's and the AI Christmas ad that was pulled

In December 2025, McDonald's Netherlands took an AI Christmas commercial offline after criticism, reported by Hart van Nederland.

What I take from this:

  • Christmas is an emotional moment. Viewers expect warmth, recognition and real people.
  • A commercial that runs on feeling gets judged harder when the image does not hold up.
  • The problem is not AI itself. It is choosing AI for exactly the type of story where it is weakest.

Audiences are critical. A Norstat survey (October 2025, n=1,020) found that 44% of Dutch people disapprove of AI in advertising, rising to 53% among over-60s. At the same time, just over half of young people find it hard to spot AI in images.

What this means for your brand: people judge the end result. If the image is not convincing and the story leans on emotion, you get criticism. If the image holds up and the story fits, nobody notices how it was made.

Lesson 2: Coca-Cola and the artificial look

In 2025, Coca-Cola made a new version of "Holidays Are Coming" with AI. A traditional production of a commercial like that is estimated at millions of dollars. Even so, the ad drew criticism for looking artificial.

What went wrong:

  • The brand translated an iconic, people-driven commercial to AI without adapting the concept to what AI does well.
  • Faces, emotion and small human details are the hardest things to make convincing.
  • Budget was not the issue. The choice of story was.

The lesson: an AI commercial needs its own concept. You do not copy an existing format and hope it works. You choose scenes, shots and a story that suit the strengths of the production method.

Lesson 3: Kalshi and what speed and cost deliver

Kalshi sits at the other end. For the NBA Finals in June 2025, Kalshi ran an AI commercial made for around $2,000 in 2 to 3 days. The creator talks about 95% lower costs than a traditional production.

Why this worked:

  • The concept was fast, absurd and visual. Nobody expected realism.
  • No famous faces were needed to carry the story.
  • The ad tied into a live moment, and speed was the whole point.

Kalshi shows where an AI commercial is strongest: when the concept is built around what AI does well and timing matters.

When AI commercial production is the right choice

Based on these lessons, an AI commercial fits well for:

  • Product-led commercials. The product is the lead. A bottle, a watch, a supplement or a trainer in a scene you would never pay for with a traditional shoot.
  • Launches. You need a hero asset for a new product quickly, with key visuals and cutdowns alongside it.
  • Social cutdowns. Short 6 to 15 second versions for Meta and TikTok, with a hook in the first three seconds.
  • Expensive locations. A product in the mountains, on a beach or in a city on the other side of the world, without travel, crew or permits.
  • Lots of variants. Several versions to test which hook or visual converts best.

For these formats you see the savings straight away. A traditional commercial of 15 to 60 seconds in the Netherlands costs €8,000 to €25,000 or more, with a single shoot day alone at €1,500 to €5,000. For a full breakdown, read how much a commercial costs.

When a traditional TV commercial is the better call

AI is not always the right choice. Go for a traditional production when:

  • The story revolves around a famous face. A real ambassador, athlete or artist should be on screen as themselves.
  • Emotion is the product. Family, loss, love and Christmas rely on human details that audiences judge instantly.
  • Your audience skews older. Disapproval of AI in advertising is highest among over-60s, as the Norstat survey shows.
  • Authenticity is the message. A documentary-style ad about your own team or factory has to be filmed for real.

A hybrid also works. You film the people for real and create product shots, locations or social cutdowns with AI. That way you get credibility where it is needed and speed where it counts.

Why direction and concept make the difference

The examples above share one thing. McDonald's and Coca-Cola had the technology and big budgets. They went wrong on concept and choice. Kalshi had a tiny budget, but the concept fitted exactly.

An AI commercial that works starts with:

  1. The right type of story. Product at the centre, no reliance on real faces.
  2. A proven ad structure. Hook within three seconds, a clear value proposition, a strong CTA.
  3. A hero shot. First one image that is right, then every following shot uses it as a reference. Your product stays the same in every scene.
  4. Stills before animation. Validate stills first, then move to motion. That avoids surprises at the end.
  5. Edit and sound. Music, voice-over and timing decide whether a commercial feels like an ad or a loose clip.

How Setless solves this

I make AI commercials for brands with a physical product. Together with you, I choose the type of commercial that fits, write the concept based on ad formulas that work on Meta and TikTok, and direct every scene from a hero shot. The Commercial package delivers a 20 to 30 second commercial with 3 cutdowns and 4 key visuals, within 10 working days.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI commercial be broadcast on TV? Yes. An AI commercial is a standard video file you can run on TV, online and on social. What matters is that the image and story are convincing to your audience.

How much does AI commercial production cost? A traditional 15 to 60 second commercial in the Netherlands costs €8,000 to €25,000 or more according to Searchlab. An AI commercial costs less because the shoot day, crew and location drop away. For Setless packages, see pricing.

Why did the McDonald's AI commercial fail? McDonald's Netherlands pulled its AI Christmas ad in December 2025 after criticism. An emotional Christmas story relies on real people and small details, and that is exactly where an unconvincing image shows first.

Which brands suit an AI TV commercial best? Brands with a physical product at the centre, such as e-commerce and D2C. Think launches, social cutdowns and scenes in locations that are too expensive for a real shoot.

Can viewers tell an ad was made with AI? Sometimes. According to Norstat, just over half of young people find it hard to spot AI in images. A well-directed commercial with the product at the centre stands out less than a story full of faces.

How fast can an AI commercial be ready? Kalshi made its commercial in 2 to 3 days. The Setless Commercial package delivers within 10 working days, including cutdowns, key visuals and one round of feedback.
