Product photos for your webshop: what do they need to meet?
11 September 2026 · Kas Benneker, founder of Setless Productions
A product photo for your webshop should be square at a minimum of 2048 by 2048 pixels, have an even background, and keep the same lighting and framing as the rest of your collection. Individual technical requirements matter less than consistency. A page with photos that differ from one another in light, angle and margin looks unprofessional, even if each photo is sharp on its own.
What technical requirements apply
Most webshop platforms, including Shopify, support files up to 5000 by 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, with a maximum of 20 MB per file. That's well above what you need. In practice, a square format of 2048 by 2048 pixels works best: large enough to zoom into, small enough to load quickly.
| Element | Guideline |
|---|---|
| File format | PNG, JPEG or WebP |
| Dimensions | 2048 x 2048 pixels |
| Aspect ratio | 1:1 (square) for all main photos |
| File size | Under 20 MB |
| Number of photos per product | At least 3: main photo, detail, context or packaging |
Why consistency outweighs technical perfection
A customer scrolls through a collection page and compares products side by side. As soon as the lighting, angle or margin differs per photo, it stands out immediately, even if the customer can't quite put a finger on it. It feels sloppy. The reverse also holds: a collection with exactly the same style per photo looks professional, regardless of whether the individual photos are technically perfect.
That's exactly why many brands get stuck with a traditional photoshoot. One day in the studio might produce twenty products, all in the same setting, with the same lighting. If you add three new products later, you need to go back to the studio to match the same style, or accept a photo that looks slightly different.
What this means for your product page
Alongside the main photo on a white or neutral background, it works well to add a context photo: the product in use, or in a setting that fits your brand. Brands that only show packshots leave conversion on the table. A product page with at least one lifestyle or context image alongside performs structurally better than a page with only a bare background.
| Photo | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Main photo, neutral background | Instant recognition, used in search results and category pages |
| Detail photo | Trust, shows quality and finish |
| Context or lifestyle photo | Persuasion, shows the product in use |
| Packaging photo | Relevant for gift sales or an unboxing feel |
How Setless solves this
Setless delivers a fixed set of images per product in the same style, without needing a studio or crew photoshoot. Because every image is built from the same reference, the style stays consistent across your entire collection, even when you add products later. That removes the reshoot that a traditional shoot would otherwise require.
Frequently asked questions
Does every product photo need to be exactly the same format? Yes, for the main photos. A fixed aspect ratio keeps your collection page looking calm. Detail and context photos can differ.
Is a white background required? No. A neutral, even background works best for the main photo, but the colour doesn't have to be white as long as it's consistent across your whole range.
How many photos does a single product need at minimum? Plan on at least three: a main photo, a detail photo and a context or lifestyle photo. More is fine, fewer works against conversion.
What if my current photos aren't consistent? It's often faster to rebuild the whole collection in one go in the same style than to update individual photos. That prevents further touch-ups later on.
